'Anna Chaplaincy' training for those wishing to support the older generation

Are you interested in building friendships of mutual trust and offering emotional and spiritual support to the older generation?

Join the Revd Phil Dykes, Diocesan Mission Enabler as he explores 'Anna Chaplaincy'.

The Anna Chaplaincy vision is for pioneering, targeted ministry among people in their later years, bringing spiritual care and support.

As western society grows ever older with the advent of better healthcare and diet, this offers a way of engaging with people in this age bracket in a godly and loving way.  Anna Chaplains and Anna Friends seek to accompany older people in later years.

The name comes from the faithful ministry of the widow and older person in the gospels who recognises the baby as Jesus the Messiah and as a fulfilment of God’s promises to his people.

Anna Chaplaincy was developed in Alton in Hampshire by Debbie Thrower, an ex-BBC presenter and correspondent who once lived in Woodbridge. Under her guidance it has become an ecumenical movement for the elderly which is now being embraced across the country, and even around the world.

An Anna Chaplain is authorised and supervised by the local church, or a group of churches, under the wider umbrella of Bible Reading Fellowship (BRF).  They work with older people building friendships of mutual trust and offering spiritual support to those they serve.  But more than that, they engage with the staff who are also caring for the people they meet, to enable them to understand what they are going through and how to help them.

There is also a role for informing and coordinating work for this age group across wider groups of churches, such as Churches Together.
