The new chaplain at Sizewell C – just the third to ever be employed at a UK power station – says he’s looking forward to supporting the ‘whole person’.
The Revd Clive Mobbs, who grew up in East Suffolk, started the role on October 28 thanks to a partnership between Sizewell C and the Church of England in Suffolk.
“I think it’s a bit like a Venn diagram – physical health, mental health and spiritual health – and they all overlap,” Clive said. “Somewhere in the middle is the whole person. I’m there for everybody - I am the chaplain for all the faiths and none. It will also be important to work alongside the various parishes in the area, to work closely with them so we are welcoming hosts in Suffolk and our communities.”
Clive said he had been supported by Revd Ewen Huffman, chaplain at Hinkley Point power station, who was the first to take up a chaplaincy role at a UK power station.
The Revd Huffman said: “It’s absolutely wonderful Revd Mobbs is joining the team as chaplain. My hope is our ceiling can become their floor.”
The Ven Rich Henderson, Archdeacon of Suffolk – who co-ordinates chaplaincy across the diocese, said: “There are nearly 50 Chaplains serving a number of sectors in Suffolk communities including police, youth groups, hospitals, hospices, schools, deaf chaplaincy, prisons, RAF, British Legion, army, agriculture and Felixstowe port. Given the large number due to be employed at Sizewell C, the Revd Clive Mobbs will be committed to their spiritual welfare, and a great asset to the project."
Sizewell C Joint Managing Director, Julia Pyke, added: “Sizewell C cares for the mental health and wellbeing of everyone who works on the project. We are very pleased to welcome Revd Clive Mobbs as our Lead Chaplain who will provide spiritual support for workers at our sites in Suffolk, whether they follow a religious faith or not.
Revd Mobbs takes up his role alongside a growing team of Mental Health First Aiders and other services, who will offer care and support to all our staff as the project continues to expand and move forward.”
Julia Pyke, Joint Managing Director at Sizewell C, said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Reverend Clive Mobbs to the Sizewell C team as Lead Chaplain. We want to continue to create an open and supportive environment for everyone here, and Clive will play a really important part in developing that culture across all our sites in Suffolk.
The spiritual support he provides – for anyone, whether they follow a religious faith or not – is a fantastic addition to the support we already have in place on site. And in a short space of time, he’s already established a presence here, conducting our Remembrance Day service and getting out on site to talk to the teams. It’s going to be exciting to see him get even more involved in the life of this project, offering valuable support to anyone who needs it.”
