A Church of England primary school in Ipswich has opened a new special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) centre – the first of its kind opened by Suffolk’s Diocesan Multi-Academy Trust.
The new centre, at Morland CofE Primary School, in Morland Road, currently has 12 Key Stage One pupils using the centre and has a maximum capacity of 18.
Headteacher John Crane said it was exciting to welcome pupils into the new centre.
“We are delighted it is now open,” he said. “It’s exceptionally important we have centres like this at our schools in Suffolk. There’s a real need for SEND provision across the county, so we are pleased to be able to provide such a much-needed service.”
Rather than constructing a brand new building, two classrooms were converted to create the new specialist SEND centre. The new centre, which opened its doors in September, opened under the name 'Wren’s Class'.
Mr Crane said the children love the new centre.
He said: “The Church of England has a long history of educating children, and it's only right we are there for all children, regardless of the challenges they face. The new centre is absolutely amazing, the first children in the centre love it – they look so happy. Then you see the parents – they are relieved their children have such a brilliant place to learn.”
