As schools across Suffolk held nativity plays, one primary school’s was a joyous occasion not least for the county’s bishop who was among those watching this year. Children at Creeting St Mary Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, near Stowmarket, performed their nativity play in front of fellow pupils, parents, staff and Bishop Martin last week. (Monday 16 December).
Bishop Martin said: “This was such a joyful occasion to be able to take time with primary school children and to share in their wonderful portrayal of the events of Jesus’ birth. I was moved by the seriousness, energy and delight with which the children performed – and by some lovely moments of humour.
"There is no doubt that December can feel like a chaotic few weeks. There is always pressure to create what we all view as a perfect Christmas. There are lots of social events, church and school services, Christmas presents to buy and what feels like a never-ending-to-do-list which you never get to the end of. However, in the midst of this chaos, our churches in Suffolk offer an opportunity to find peace in a very busy period.
"The Church of England’s theme for Advent and Christmas 2024 is to follow the star and to stay calm and bright which draws upon the world-famous carol, Silent Night! Holy Night! All is calm, all is bright. My message to the St Mary’s Creeting primary school children and indeed to all of us is, may we enjoy ourselves this Christmas, and find ways to help those who are less fortunate to enjoy themselves too."
