Lightwave, part of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, alongside BBC Radio Suffolk are behind the initiative to bring people together and spread Christmas cheer despite the restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Suffolk was placed in tier two restrictions from Wednesday 2 December which means that gatherings of more than six people are not permitted, however caroling from your doorstep is allowed under the new restrictions and goes a long way to spread Christmas cheer.
The event will take place on across the county on Wednesday 16 December at 6pm and will feature a range of different carols.
Christina Johnston, a classical and opera singer from Framlingham, will be taking part in the event and also recorded a carol for the occasion.
Archdeacon Sally Gaze, said: “Christina’s song captures the heart of Doorstep Carols this year. It reminds us that although the emphasis on shopping and partying is gone this year, neighbours can still share Christmas love. I believe that reflects the Saviour’s love at the heart of this season.”
BBC Suffolk will be broadcasting carols and those joining in will be able to tune into the station and sing along.
Jon Wright, Journalist and Presenter at BBC Radio Suffolk said: “Doorstep carols is a brilliant idea and it’s great to be a part of something which genuinely brings people together. It also shows the unique places local radio has in our community – there’s no other way we could get thousands of people across the county all singing along at the same time. We’re using carols we’ve recorded at past BBC Radio Suffolk carol concerts at Snape Maltings, the Apex and the Cathedral so it’ll be a lovely mix of Suffolk voices past and present. I can’t wait…”
BBC Suffolk is available to everyone across the county and can be access via different radio frequencies based on location: Ipswich - 103.9 FM, West Suffolk - 104.6 FM, Lowestoft - 95.5 FM and Aldeburgh - 95.9 FM.
